João Guerreiro is a Project Scientist at the Cognitive Assistance Lab at the Carnegie Mellon University. His research focuses on the use of technology to support and improve real-world Orientation and Mobility of people with visual impairments.

In his recent work, he studied how to design and improve smartphone-based navigation systems, and how can virtual navigation be used to support cognitive mapping of unfamiliar environments, including how the spatial knowledge acquired virtually impacts real-world navigation.

João obtained a PhD and a MSc from the University of Lisbon, Portugal. His PhD focused on non-visual interfaces with simultaneous speech to speed-up blind people’s access to personally relevant digital information.
