SUMMARY:National Robotics Week Robotics Institute Open House: Keynote Presentation - Raj Reddy - The Future of AI and Robotics
DESCRIPTION:Rashid Auditorium\, Gates Hillman 4401\nIn Person\nOpen to the public\n\nThe last decade has seen extraordinary advances in AI. The potential arrival of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) has profound implications for future of our society. We anticipate a world where AI assistants and humanoid-robots will perform most of the  tasks requiring human expertise and skill at 10% of current costs. In this paradigm\, essential services—including food\, housing\, energy\, education\, healthcare\, and transportation—will be provided via Universal Basic Services\, signaling a historic shift  from a society of scarcity to one of abundance. \nThis transformation raises a critical concern: widespread displacement of traditional labor. What is the human role when AI can do everything? This talk presents an  alternative scenario: a “Human-in-the-Loop” evolution. In this model\, humans  transition into high-level supervisory roles\, collaborating with AGI to train robots in novel skills and adapt them to unforeseen tasks. \nWe explore this as the “Maharaja Model” where technology serves humanity so comprehensively that work will be optional for humans. Finally\, we will discuss how  institutions like the Robotics Institute must lead this transition\, developing the hybrid technologies and ethical frameworks necessary to bridge the gap between our current economy and a robot-assisted future. \n— \nRaj Reddy is a University Professor of Computer Science and Robotics and Moza Bint Nasser Chair at Carnegie Mellon University. He was an Assistant Professor at Stanford from 1966-69 and Faculty Member at Carnegie Mellon since 1969. He served as the founding Director of the Robotics Institute from 1979 to 1991 and the Dean of School of Computer Science from 1991 to 1999. \nHe has been active in AI research for over five decades in the areas of AI\, Speech Understanding\, Image Understanding\, Robotics\, Multi-sensor Fusion\, and Intelligent Agents. Dr. Reddy’s current research interests include: Technology in Service of Society\, Voice Computing for the 3B semi-literate populations at the bottom of the pyramid\, Digital Democracy\, and Learning Science and Technologies. \nHe is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He served as co-chair of President Clinton’s Information Technology Advisory Committee (PITAC) from 1999 to 2001. SUMMARY:The Teruko Yata Memorial Lecture in Robotics - Boris Sofman -  Journeys from Research to Commercialization: Lessons from Anki\, Waymo\, and Bedrock Robotics
DESCRIPTION:Boris Sofman (Carnegie Mellon Robotics Institute\, PhD\, 2010) has experienced many stages of the company-building journey in robotics: founding startups from scratch\, scaling products to mass market\, and operating within one of the world’s most ambitious and expensive technology programs. At Anki\, he took an idea from prototype to millions of consumer robots in homes around the world. At Waymo\, he was part of the leadership team during the inflection point from a decade of R&D into one of the most dramatic commercial adoptions in tech history. Now\, at Bedrock Robotics\, he’s bringing autonomous systems to 50-ton construction machines to help America build infrastructure at an unprecedented speed and scale. \nIn this lecture\, Boris will share an honest account of that journey and its lessons\, including the energizing wins\, the wrong turns and painful surprises\, and the moments where an earlier experience turned out to matter more than expected. Closing with a deeper look at Bedrock\, he will share why he believes autonomous construction is one of the most important problems robotics can tackle right now\, driven by a unique convergence of maturing technology and critical industry need. For students at the beginning of their own paths\, this is a talk about how a career in robotics and entrepreneurship might actually unfold\, the many variables one navigates in the journey\, and why the connections you cannot yet see may end up being the most valuable ones. \nAbout the Lecture: The Yata Memorial Lecture in Robotics is presented by the Robotics Institute\, in conjunction with the SCS Distinguished Lecture Series. Teruko Yata was a postdoctoral fellow in the Robotics Institute from 2000 until her untimely death in 2002. After graduating from the University of Tsukuba\, working under the guidance of Prof. Yuta\, she came to the United States. At Carnegie Mellon\, she served as a post-doctoral fellow in the Robotics Institute for three years\, under Chuck Thorpe. Teruko’s accomplishments in the field of ultrasonic sensing were highly regarded and won her the Best Student Paper Award at the International Conference on Robotics and Automation in 1999. DESCRIPTION:Abstract: As the inventor of VDB and founder of OpenVDB\, I am excited to talk about its history\, motivation\, and diverse adoption. Specifically\, this lecture will cover the underlying VDB data structure\, and its adoption to computer graphics\, physics simulations and more recently machine learning. Since its open-source release in 2012\, OpenVDB has become an industry standard and has been used in numerous VFX franchises like “Avatar”\, “Avengers”\, “The Mummy”\, “Pirates of the Caribbean”\, “Kung Fu Panda”\, and “How to Train Your Dragon”. It is adopted by numerous commercial software packages used by the entertainment industry\, including Houdini\, RenderMan\, Arnold\, Blender\, and Unreal Engine\, just to mention a few. OpenVDB has also found use in many areas outside of media and entertainment\, including SLAM\, autonomous driving\, topology optimization\, semiconductor designs\, 3D printing\, medical imaging\, rocket design\, aerial surveillance\, robotics\, and many machine learning applications. Finally\, OpenVDB was the first open-source project to be adopted by the Academy Software Foundation (ASWF) and the Linux Foundation (in 2018). \nBio: Ken Museth is Sr Director of the High-Fidelity Physics Research team at Nvidia and chair of the Technical Steering Committee for OpenVDB under the Academy Software Foundation. He has a PhD in quantum physics from Copenhagen University and did his postgraduate studies in computer science at Caltech. Previously he was a Sr. Computational Scientist at SpaceX for six years\, working on CFD simulations of the Raptor engine\, Head of Simulation R&D at Weta FX for three years\, working on James Cameron’s Avatar 2\, director for FX and CFX simulation teams at DreamWorks Animation for eight years\, Sr Software Engineer at Digital Domain for three years\, full tenured professor in computer graphics at Linköping University for four years\, where he supervised five PhD and 15 MSc students\, and research scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory for three years\, working on space-mission design and visualization. Ken invented and founded OpenVDB for which he won two Academy Awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences; a Technical Achievement Award (Academy Certificate) in 2015 and a Scientific & Engineering Award (Academy Plaque) in 2024. Additionally\, in 2023 he was awarded the ACM SIGGRAPH Practitioner Award and was accepted into the ACM SIGGRAPH Academy. SUMMARY:Teruko Yata Memorial Lecture in Robotics
DESCRIPTION:Title: Learning World Simulators from Data\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract: \nModern foundational models have achieved superhuman performance in many logic and mathematical  reasoning tasks by learning to think step by step.  However\, their ability to understand videos\, and\, consequently\, control embodied agents\, lags behind. They often make mistakes in recognizing simple activities\, and often hallucinate when  generating videos. This raises a fundamental question: What is the equivalent of thinking step-by-step for visual recognition and prediction? \nIn this talk\, we argue that step-by-step visual reasoning has much to do with inverting a physics simulator\, that is\, mapping raw video pixels back to a structured\, 3D-like neural representation of the world. This  involves inferring 3D neural representations of  objects\, parts\, their 3D motion and appearance trajectories\, estimating camera movements and 3D scene structure and physics properties.  We will discuss methods to automatically extract such 3D neural representations from images and videos using generative model priors and end-to-end feed-forward models. We will present methods that inject such knowledge of camera motion and 3D scene structure in modern VLMs and show it improves their ability to ground language and control robot manipulators. \nHow can we scale up annotations for such simulator inversion? We will discuss methods that use generative models  of language and vision to automate development of 3D simulations in physics engines. Additionally\, we will discuss our efforts in developing faster and more general physics engines. The integration of physics engines with generative models aims to automate the replication of real physical environments within the physics simulator\, enabling more accurate and scalable world simulation data for sim-to-real learning of 3D perception and action. We believe such real-to-sim and sim-to-real learning paradigms are very hopeful for developing robots that can see and think accurately\, step-by-step. \n\n\n\n\n\nBio:  \nKaterina Fragkiadaki is the JPMorgan Chase Associate Professor in the Machine Learning Department in Carnegie Mellon University. She received her undergraduate diploma from Electrical and Computer Engineering in the National Technical University of Athens.  \nShe received her Ph.D. from University of Pennsylvania and was a postdoctoral fellow in \nUC Berkeley and Google research after that.  Her work focuses on combining \nforms of common sense reasoning\, such as spatial understanding and 3D scene understanding\, with deep visuomotor learning.  The goal of her work is to enable few-shot learning and continual learning for perception\, action and language grounding.  Her  group develops methods for computer vision for mobile agents\, 2D and 3D visual parsing\, 2D-to-3D perception\,  vision-language grounding\,  learning of object dynamics\, navigation and manipulation policies. Pioneering innovations of her group’s research include 2D-to-3D geometry-aware neural networks for 3D understanding from 2D video streams\,   analogy-forming networks for memory-augmented few-shot visual parsing\, and language-grounding in 2D and 3D scenes with bottom-up and top-down attention.  Her work has been awarded with a best Ph.D. thesis award\,  an NSF CAREER award\, AFOSR Young Investigator award\, a DARPA Young Investigator award\, Google\, TRI\, Amazon\, NVIDIA\, UPMC and Sony faculty research awards. She was a program chair for ICLR 2024. \n\n\n\n— \nAbout the Lecture: The Yata Memorial Lecture in Robotics is part of the School of Computer Science Distinguished Lecture Series. Teruko Yata was a postdoctoral fellow in the Robotics Institute from 2000 until her untimely death in 2002. After graduating from the University of Tsukuba\, working under the guidance of Prof. Yuta\, she came to the United States. At Carnegie Mellon\, she served as a post-doctoral fellow in the Robotics Institute for three years\, under Chuck Thorpe. Teruko’s accomplishments in the field of ultrasonic sensing were highly regarded and won her the Best Student Paper Award at the International Conference on Robotics and Automation in 1999. DESCRIPTION:Join entrepreneur Samay Kohli as he traces his journey taking industrial robotics from university research to mass adoption. Kohli will reflect on key inflection points in scaling his company’s solutions\, including pivoting from individual robot products to an integrated system\, building for variability in emerging markets\, and aligning with industry needs. He’ll discuss critical mindset shifts required at each stage of evolution – from an idea\, to a product\, to an application\, and eventually a scalable solution. In the second half of his talk\, Kohli will share insights on how he could have accelerated this expansion through clearer focus on core problems first rather than technology\, seeking global expertise early\, and identifying adjacent growth opportunities like software services. Attendees will learn frameworks for developing university research into real-world technologies\, strategies for survival and growth amid industry disruptions\, and lessons in entrepreneurial perseverance from Kohli’s 15+ year journey. With Kohli’s experience taking robotics from labs to warehouses worldwide\, this talk provides a unique perspective for aspiring entrepreneurs at the intersection of innovation and implementation.\n \nBio: Mr. Samay Kohli is a Co-Founder and serves as a Board Member at GreyOrange. Under Samay’s leadership over the past decade\, GreyOrange has become one of the fastest-growing robotics companies globally\, with over 650 employees and offices in India\, Japan\, Germany\, Singapore\, and the US. The extraordinary growth pace of GreyOrange speaks volumes of Samay’s contribution both as a builder/leader and a visionary who has transformed the supply chain automation industry globally with over 10k robots deployed. Samay himself is an impressive entrepreneur and thought leader in the robotics space. He has over 13 years of experience working in robotics\, supply chain technology\, and manufacturing industries. Samay’s passion for Robotics started about a decade ago. He was part of the team that created one of India’s first indigenous humanoid robots – AcYut. Samay has participated in robotics competitions across 13 countries; winning a Gold medal at the ROBOlympics in 2009. An alumnus of BITS (Pilani)\, India\, Samay has been a keynote speaker at several prominent technology conferences around the world\, and has been featured in many publications including Forbes\, Economic Times\, The Fortune\, and has made his way to MIT Technology Review’s global list of “35 Innovators under 35”.

SUMMARY:Teruko Yata Memorial Lecture : Mobility and Manipulation Independence with Interface-Aware Robotics Intelligence
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Brenna Argall is an associate professor of Mechanical Engineering\, Electrical Engineering & Computer Science and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at Northwestern University. Her research lies at the intersection of robotics autonomy\, machine learning and human rehabilitation. She is director of the assistive & rehabilitation robotics laboratory (argallab) at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC\, now the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab)\, the nation’s premier rehabilitation hospital. The mission of the argallab is to advance human ability by leveraging robotics autonomy. \nArgall is a 2016 recipient of the NSF CAREER award\, and was named one of the 40 under 40 by Crain’s Chicago Business. Her Ph.D. in Robotics (2009) was received from the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University\, where she was a member of the CORAL Research Group. Her B.S. in Mathematics (2002) also was received from Carnegie Mellon\, where she minored in Music and Biological Sciences. Prior to joining Northwestern and RIC\, she was a postdoctoral fellow (2009-2011) in the Learning Algorithms and Systems Laboratory at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). Prior to graduate school she held a Computational Biology position in the Laboratory of Brain & Cognition at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
