Changliu Liu, associate professor at the Robotics Institute (RI) at Carnegie Mellon University, earned the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) Robotics Outstanding Young Researcher Award “for significant and sustained contributions in intelligent robot control with provable safety and efficient human-robot collaboration in manufacturing, logistics, and autonomous driving.” Liu received the award during the ceremony at the 2025 Joint IFAC Symposium on Mechatronic Systems and Robotics in Paris, France.

The Technical Committee on Robotics selected Liu based on her extensive series of work on human-robot collaboration. In the RI Intelligent Control Lab, Liu focuses on achieving lifelong safety of autonomous robotic systems in uncertain and interactive environments. Some of the problems she addresses include augmenting existing autonomous systems by adding smart safety features, or “safe guardians”, that adjust the system’s actions when needed to maintain safety and efficacy in unpredictable environments. The Robotics Outstanding Young Researcher Award recognizes the critical applications of her work in real-life scenarios.
