Robotics Institute Director Search – Fall 2019


The School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University is seeking an energetic and visionary leader for the position of Full Professor and Director of the Robotics Institute. The Robotics Institute (RI), one of seven academic units in the School, is the world’s premier academic and research Robotics department, with 64 Robotics faculty, offering a Robotics Ph.D. program as well as three Master’s programs and undergraduate majors. RI facilities include 200,000 square feet at the Carnegie Mellon Pittsburgh campus and at the National Robotics Engineering Center. The successful candidate, who will report directly to the Dean of the School of Computer Science, will embody key qualities at the heart of RI’s vigor. These include: leadership, commercialization experience, contractual expertise, mentorship, compassion, research vision, thought leadership, social awareness, educational vision. The Director’s office currently includes the following Associate Directors, who support the Robotics Institute along multiple critical dimensions: Associate Director for Finance and Administration; Associate Director for Faculty; and, Associate Director for Education.


Candidates should possess an earned doctorate in a relevant discipline and should have an outstanding record of (i) research productivity with significant impact on research and practice, as demonstrated through publication record, peer-reviewed extramural funding, and external recognitions; (ii) teaching and other educational contributions at the graduate and/or undergraduate levels; (iii) leadership in interdisciplinary research initiatives; (iv) commitment to nurture Carnegie Mellon’s inclusive and culturally diverse environment; (v) productive academic leadership and service. Prior administrative experience is desirable, but not required.
