We decided to make fruit and vegetable t' LdrUplates ourselves - much cheaper than buying from a place like Giant Eagle. We arrived about It' LarWan hour before the party to wash and cut up the fruits and veggies, and we had to make ' Lre\special arrangements to bring serving platters. For this number of people, you need about 3 ' L_containers of dip. In a blind taste test, the pre-mixed veggie dip tasted better than the kind @' L you mix with sour cream. LYTWe also bought pies from Giant Eagles bakery, since Gulliftys and USA Gourmet are y Ls SREALLY expensive in comparison. Due to budgetary problems, we decided to make some ll Ler\of the desserts ourselves. As with the fruits and veggies, there were lots of desserts left lv* Lth\over. Several people also brought desserts. It might be nice if in the future, we encourage ri8 LetZpeople to bring a dessert. Various people are bound to be much more creative dessert-wise F@ L c"than the usual pie and ice cream. \ LUThe amount of Chinese food that we ordered was also a bit much. We got 11 enchillada dinners, 11 L99Zburritos, and 2 nachos supreme, costing $163. They didnt give us any volume discount off L[the menu. ' LshYThe are a range of rivers (Youghighney, New, Gauley and the Cheat rivers, to name a few) n5 Lbo\and a range of rapids classes from class I to to dire straits. The Yough (pronounced Yock), anC Lae[the river we usually raft, is a forgiving river whose rapids are followed by calm sections bofQ LgeXand, depending on the water level, are adventurous but not life-threatening. Typically, \_ LonZbecause of its lower cost and proximity (90 min driving) the rafting trip is done in the m LybRYough at Ohiopyle State Park just below Ohiopyle Falls. It is also one of the few {@ Lr7whitewater rivers in the area that has unguided trips. 0 LrSIt is possible to arrange a guided tour or an unguided one. The guided one is more LUT^expensive but they provide the food, tell you how to ride the rapids in the correct way (it Le Zdoes take away some of the fun though!). Also, they carry the rafts back from the takeout LCh\point back to the rental place. On an unguided tour you have to get your own lunch (pack it o Lhe]well and tie it off!), and have to carry the rafts back to the rental place from the takeout e L f[point which is about 40 meters uphill. However, there are simple tricks keep the lunch dry ntu LthW(and safe!), and if you can convince a pickup or minivan owner to come along, the trip 0 m@ Lft7should be a breeze. Past trips have been all unguided. iop Lt YOrganizing the rafting trip is actually rather low intensity. Just a phone call and some t LngUbookkeeping. In 1993 and 1995 we went with White Water Adventures. To not have large u% LedUout-of-pocket costs the organizer should get some money up front to both insure that 3 L iZpeople will come and get a cash advance. In 1995, 24 people went and had a great time and A L\the cost was only $2 per person. Murali organized the 1994 trip. The trip never happened in ouO@ Lyo&1994 although contacts etc were made. i` Y iTiming and Costs oy LacUShould preferably be organized a little earlier than the end of September bcause the e Ler\weather is likely to be cooler and the water level lower then. The cost of an unguided tour ca Lp Ywith White Water Adventures was $13.28 per person (4 man rafts). This was for a Saturday t L uZand the rates are lower for weekdays. Organizer needs to call up the rental place and the Lal[Ohiopyle state park (412-329-8591) to get launch permits ($2.50 per/person + $2.00 for the ntu LarZbus ride). The total therefore was $18.50 per head. The launch spots for weekends usually L \get filled up pretty quickly so it is good to reserve an ample number of launch slots early a LZenough. The rental is usually not a problem since the rental companies do carry many more Lou^rafts/lifejackets than the demand. Wet suits, for those worried about the cold, are available L]for (approx) $7.50. The Robograd budget subsidized the trip and the final cost to individual @ Lwe"students in 1995 was about $3.00. ` Y t Logistics / LouUWhen you get to the rafting place in the morning with N cars, take the N cars to the s= LSa_takeout point with only one driver per car and have the drivers return to the rafting place in e rK Le \only one car. This is about a 20 minute trip. Park close to wear the buses come up and drop onY Ltu^rafters off. Try to keep one large van or truck at the takeout point to take the rafts on the g L_later return trip. Please organize this as quickly as possible - itll make things go quickly. slu L[You will also need bus tokens which can be purchased at the State Park launch point across ma L_the street from the rafting place. These are $2 each and are clipped to the life jackets. CUT UT` OasAlcohol Policy ormS` LtHFollowing is the RoboOrg interpretation of the official alcohol policy: yi LrgZThe bottom line is this: To have alcohol at an event that is partially or fully funded by w LveVRoboOrg, either on or off campus, we must follow University procedures. These require L eYfilling out a CMU alcohol event registration form, signed by a faculty or staff member LUwho has taken the social host responsibility class and is willing to BE PRESENT AT LDTHE FUNCTION [and L TAKE REPSONSIBILITY FOR ENSURING LEGAL AND L`SRESPONSIBLE DISPENSING of alcoholic beverages. This means ensuring drinkers are of t y@ LetDlegal drinking age (21) and ensuring nobody is getting too trashed. t LasWWhat does this mean to us? The impact is minimal because we dont often serve alcohol, oug LdeVbut a small ad-hoc subcommittee was quickly and efficiently formed to draft RoboOrgs @ LoOofficial position: the LpoLWe wont serve any alcohol at a function for which we dont have the proper ve LlyQpermit. This also means that individuals cant bring alcohol to a function for ! LprUwhich we do not have a permit. (ie: bring a case of beer or collect money for a beer t/@ Lbyrun.) y oC LUWe wont *ask* a faculty or staff member to sign the form if they are not willing to oQ LWattend the function. If he/she offers to do so or doesnt show up, thats a gray area. _ LREQn he key here is we dont want to pressure faculty to take the responsibility by ym@ Letsaying trust us!. 21` LodLIf the faculty/staff member leaves the event, we will stop serving alcohol. he L bICMU allows alcohol in private areas. These include offices. However, a d LwaNRoboLounge or conference room is not considered a private area. Therefore, we LOcant have alcohol in the RoboLounge or in a conference room unless the proper e t@ Lpermit is obtained. his LndKIt is OK to have Non-RoboEvents. A Non-RoboEvent is an off-campus party, e d Lt.Qsponsored and funded by individuals, open primarily to Robos, where alcohol will @ LObe served. (i.e. Its just a party where Robos happen to dominate the crowd.) ill LXAgain, impact is minimal. The Holiday/Christmas Party and Monday Night Football are the a LWmain events directly affected at thispoint. But the only restriction there is getting y y@ Let[permission to serve alcohol (faculty/staff attendance) and limiting access to the alcohol. e w5 LlcYWe strongly advise prospective host to meet with Jim LaPaglia, Director of CMU Security.
