Abstract
This paper describes a robotic walker, designed as assistive device for cognitively frail elderly people. Unlike previous walkers, which focused on safety but provided no guidance, our system is able to guide disoriented people through their environments. This capability is achieved by a suite of software for robot localization and navigation, combined with a shared-control haptic interface on the walker. The system has been tested in a nursing facility near Pittsburgh, PA, where it has been found to be highly effective.
