Project Description

The Medical Image Registration System uses planar X-ray images to estimate the position and orientation of patient anatomy with respect to an external coordinate frame.

In order to meet clinical requirements for registration latency, CMU-developed computer graphics algorithms to render high resolution simulated radiographs in a fraction of a second.

Simulated radiographs are compared with actual X-ray images using a novel image comparison algorithm is robust to noise and clutter due to other anatomy in the images.

The system achieves sub-mm registration accuracies in preliminary tests, with total registration times on the order of 50s. Tests using clinical patient data are underway.
