Project Description

The goal of the ABB Transformer-Winding Project was to increase the production speed and quality of transformer winding through sensing and automation. Important results included:

Development and implementation of winding algorithms for non-axisymmetric smooth and polygonal shapes guaranteeing closure of helically wound filament layers and reducing material buildup and waste.

Development of a touchscreen-based user interface for winding machine operators.

Development of a vision-based method of measuring the gap between adjacent conductors on a rotating, non-axisymmetric mandrel.
