Biography

Alonzo Kelly is an associate professor at the Robotics Institute of Carnegie Mellon University. He received his B. A. Sc. in Aerospace engineering from University of Toronto in 1984, his B. Sc. in computer science from York University in 1990, and his Masters and Ph.D. degrees in robotics from Carnegie Mellon University in 1994 and 1996 respectively. His research interests include perception, planning, control, simulation, and operator interfaces for indoor and outdoor mobile robots.


Dr. Kelly has worked in robotics and automation for approximately 15 years in both industrial and academic settings. Some of the projects to which he has contributed include:

  • a merchandising robot for assisting and entertaining shoppers
  • several outdoor autonomous vehicles for terrestrial and space uses
  • projects to develop laser rangefinder hardware
  • a project to develop high speed stereo vision software
  • a project to develop inertial and satellite navigation systems for autonomous vehicles
  • a telerobot for the Space Shuttle
  • several others for nuclear power plants
  • a flexible manufacturing workcell for various cut-to-order sheet stock industries
