Research Interests

Smith's research objective is to design, build and test heavy duty off-road robotic systems that will evolve to be used in industry and the military to solve tasks in complex, changing and dangerous environments. One of his long term goals is eliminating or minimizing the need for IC engines in the off-road robots drive system through the use of conventional fuel powered fuel cells. Smith's expertise includes system integration, power train and thermal modeling; and designing, building and testing complex heavy duty off-road vehicles. His experience covers the design and integration of electronic warfare and C4I; parallel and series hybrid electrical vehicle; heavy duty off-road trucks; water maker integration; power generation; and semi-conductor wafer handling robotics.
