Research interests

My research at CMU, done with Prof. Yoky Matsuoka, was at the intersect of robotics and neuroscience. In particular I was interested in using robots in hospitals to administer physical therapy to patients of neurological injury and stroke.

Part I: To evaluate various robotic techniques, I took the novel approach of first testing my theories out on rats. Thus I could study risky strategies that would otherwise not be possible on humans.

In order to do rodent testing, I built the worlds first robotic workcell to study upper body rehabilitation on rats. I also proposed metrics to measure the rats recovery as the therapy progressed.

Part II: I proposed a paradigm called "robotic passive movement therapy", and pointed out previously unexpected benefits that this form of therapy may have on neural healing. I validated my environment and metrics by doing preliminary tests to validate this theory. These tests showed that the environment and metrics could indeed measure different recovery rates.

Conclusion: The avenues opened up by this novel robotic workcell has created considerable excitement at the University of Pittsburgh Medical College, where researchers are planning on using this environment to better understand not only pure robotic rehabilitation but also robotic rehabilitation under medication.

Hunting for jobs:

I am currently looking for jobs in robotics and/or computer science in the Seattle area. Apart from Medical Robotics (the area of my research) I took courses in Computer Vision, Object Recognition, Artificial Intelligence, Entrepreneurship, Dynamics and Control. I also have two years experience working in the area of mobile technology. Some of my past academic projects include cluster computing, mobile robots and face recognition.
