Biography

I received a PhD. in Robotics from CMU in 2003. I am currently a postdoc at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and a visiting researcher at CMU.

Research interests

I do research in computer vision, 3D modeling, and, more recently, neuroscience. The overarching theme of my research over the past several years has been using shape characteristics to make inferences about objects and scenes as they appear in a variety of image modalities. Currently, I am working on predicting risk of Alzheimer's Disease based on shape analysis of compartments in the brain; previously, I used shape properties to recognize complex objects in photographs and range data. I also worked on making 3D models from unstructured sets of range images.

Past Labs & Groups

3D Computer Vision Group - We are developing techniques for representing, comparing, and matching general, free-form surfaces.
Biomedical Image Analysis - We are an interdisciplinary team interested in develping algorithms for biomedical image analysis under an image feature-based machine learning framework.
Vision and Mobile Robotics Lab - Our group studies fundamental problems of Computer Vision and ground mobile robotics.
 

Past Projects

3D Object Recognition - We are applying our techniques for surface representation and matching to object recognition problems; for example, we have used 3D object recognition as part of the Artisan system for interior mapping.
Humanoid Vision - We are adding visual recognition and navigation to Honda's humanoid robots
Model Building - Surface registration is applied to a variety of problems, including object modelling and mapping of large areas.
Predicting Risk of Alzheimer's Disease From Shape Features - The goal of this project is to use computer vision techniques to help predict risk of Alzheimer's Disease in elderly patients.
