How to make updates to the RI web site

Person page updates | Lab updates | Project updates | Publication updates | List updates

We are always happy to receive feedback about our web site. General comments about the site should be sent to: robotwebmaster@ri.cmu.edu.

The RI web site is continuously maintained by several people who will make all updates for you. Here is a summary of how the administration work is divided:

If information is missing from the database, that portion of a page is simply not displayed. To have the missing or incorrect information updated, first determine which page is incorrect. Then contact the person responsible for administering that portion of the site.

The rest of this page describes what type of information should / can appear on each type of page and who should be contacted in order to make updates and corrections. If you cannot determine who is responsible for your particular update or suggestion, please contact robotwebmaster@ri.cmu.edu.

Note: When sending update information, all that's needed is plain text. You can, of course, supply HTML markup for the:

sections of your personal page and section of your project or lab page, if desired, but for all other information, plain text with update directions (add, delete, change, etc.) is sufficient.

Note: If you want to update your name, please reconsider. Changing your name from what was initially entered in the Human Resources database (and consequently read by the RI database), changes your name everywhere; paychecks, IDs, etc., and should not be done trivially.

How to update your person page

Any place on the site where your name is listed, it is linked to your person page. Only RI members have a person page. Those who are not RI members but are involved with RI labs or projects will still be listed on the lab or project personnel lists, but for these people, only their name, title, department, email address, and homepage are maintained in the RI web database.

A note about privacy:To protect your privacy, some information on your person page can be hidden from those viewing from outside of CMU. Currently, your office address, phone numbers, fax numbers, and photograph may be made private. By default, this information is initially hidden, and if you want it viewable from outside of CMU, you must send email to the personnel administrator (riweb-people@ri.cmu.edu).

Section Description Who is responsible
Photo When you first arrive, you should get photographed for the RI bulletin board. Also, periodically, new photos are taken for everyone in RI. This is the photo that is displayed at the top of your page. You may choose not to have your photo displayed on your external web page (see the privacy section above), but your photo will remain on your internal page. Personnel photo administrator
(riweb-photos@ri.cmu.edu)
Contact information Also listed at the top of the page. This includes your name, job title, associated center(s), email address, office (building and room), phone numbers (you can have two), fax number, mailing address, and homepage. You may choose not to have your contact information displayed on your external web page (see the privacy section above). Personnel administrator
(riweb-people@ri.cmu.edu)
Biography This section applies mainly to faculty and is meant to list biographical information such as the university where you earned your PhD and any awards and honors you have received. Research interests administrator
(riweb-interests@ri.cmu.edu)
Research interests This section only applies if you are a researcher (faculty, student, or staff).. For faculty who can advise students, this information is also used for the faculty research guide. This section should contain a few paragraphs describing your research interests. Research interests administrator
(riweb-interests@ri.cmu.edu)
Research interest keywords Keywords only apply if you are a researcher. The purpose of the keywords is to keep a relatively small list of interests so that keyword-based searches can be effective. The list of available keywords is found here. You can also suggest new keywords to the research interests administrator, but this should be used sparingly. Research interests administrator
(riweb-interests@ri.cmu.edu)
(Other) interests and responsibilities For researchers, this section can list non-research related information. Personal information such as "I like cats." should be avoided, but if you are on some committee or maintain the Computer Vision Homepage, this is the appropriate place to list such data. Non-researchers can use this section to list their responsibilities. Research interests administrator
(riweb-interests@ri.cmu.edu)
Labs and Projects If you are a member of any labs and/or projects, they will be listed in this section. See the lab or project page instructions for details about this data. Research administrator
(riweb-research@ri.cmu.edu)
Publications / Selected publications The publications in the database for which you are an author are listed here in reverse chronological order. Alternately, you can list only selected publications, with a separate link to your full publication list. See the publication update instructions.

How to update a lab page

All of the information on the lab pages is maintained by the research administrator (riweb-research@ri.cmu.edu). To create a new lab page, send all the following information to the research administrator.

Section Description
Photo A representative photo for the lab is displayed at the top of the page. This could be a photo of one of the projects in the lab or something that illustrates all of the projects.
Contact information Displayed at the top of the page. This information includes the lab's head(s), contact person (and email address), mailing address, associated center(s), and homepage.
Description Provides a brief overview of the lab, including a summary of research conducted in the lab (past and present), goals of the lab, and information about collaborative efforts.
Subject Areas Each lab may have a couple of relevant subject areas associated with it for categorization and searching purposes.

Artificial Intelligence
Graphics & Visualization
Human-Computer Interaction
Manipulation
Manufacturing & Inspection
Medical Applications
Mobile Robotics
Space Robotics
Systems & Control
Vision, Perception & Sensors
Other Areas

Personnel Lists the people that are currently members of the lab. Past members are listed on a sub-page accessible from a link on the section title bar. People in the personnel list do not have to be members of RI, since many people from outside of RI work on RI projects.
Projects Lists the current projects in the lab. Past projects are listed on a sub-page accessible from a link on the section title bar.
Publications See the publication update instructions.

How to update a project page

All of the information on the project pages is maintained by the research administrator (riweb-research@ri.cmu.edu). To create a new project page, send all the following information to the research administrator.

Section Description
Photo A representative photo for the project is displayed at the top of the page. Send the AFS path to a JPEG image if possible. If that's not possible, we'll make other arrangements. The image will then be reformated and resized.
Contact information Displayed at the top of the page. This information includes the project's head(s), contact person (and email address), mailing address, associated center(s), associated lab(s), and homepage.
Description Provides a brief overview of the project. Please send both a short one-sentence description (which will appear in the project lists) and a longer one (which will appear on the project's page) which describes the project, its goals, recent achievements, future plans, and an explanation as to why the project is useful.
Subject Areas Each project may have one or more relevant subject areas associated with it for categorization and searching purposes.

Artificial Intelligence
Graphics & Visualization
Human-Computer Interaction
Manipulation
Manufacturing & Inspection
Medical Applications
Mobile Robotics
Space Robotics
Systems & Control
Vision, Perception & Sensors
Other Areas

Personnel Lists the people that are currently working on the project. Past members are listed on a sub-page accessible from a link on the section title bar. People in the personnel list do not have to be members of RI, since many people from outside of RI work on RI projects. Send a complete list with non-RI, non-CMU, and alumni designated.
Sub-projects Sometimes, projects are best organized into one large project containing many small "sub-projects". This section lists the current sub-projects in the project. Past sub-projects are listed on a sub-page accessible from a link on the section title bar.
Publications See the publication update instructions.

How to update publications

To add a new publication, fill out a web-based form with the necessary information. The process takes about five minutes and is restricted to RI members working in the cmu.edu domain. To make an update to a publication already in the database, contact the the publication administrator (riweb-pubs@ri.cmu.edu).

How to update list pages

Throughout the RI web site, there are lists of personnel, projects, and labs. To make updates, the responsible person is determined by the type of information in the list.

List type Description Who is responsible
Personnel lists An entry in a personnel list contains a person's name, title, and email address. The actual text that appears in the title column depends on the person's class (e.g. faculty, student, staff) and their department. Personnel administrator
(riweb-people@ri.cmu.edu)
Center membership These lists are accessed from the center pages. People can be current members of a center, or they can be listed as past members, linked from the current member list. Research administrator
(riweb-research@ri.cmu.edu)
Lab and project lists Accessed from the front page, these lists include all current labs and projects within RI. Older labs and projects that are no longer active are listed on a "past labs" or "past projects" sub-page. Research administrator
