Searching the RI Web
This search allows you to locate the RI homepage of any RI member by
searching by name. You can browse
these pages as well. You
can search based on first name, last name, or both (order is first
last). Here are some examples. Note: The search string and results are
enclosed in square brackets, but you should not type those in your
search.

Publication Search |
There are two levels of publication search: simple and advanced. The simple search allows you to find publications based on author, title, abstract, or subject keyword. The advanced search allows up to four of these simple searches to be "anded" together and provides additional capabilities of selecting case sensitivity and searching by date range and center name.
Author search operates by the same rules as the people search, except that case-sensitivity can be controlled independently via the Case sensitive checkbox.
By default, title, abstract, and subject keyword searches will look for all of the words or phrases in the search string in any order. Each word can make a partial match, so a search for navigat will match navigate and navigation. Phrases are indicated by enclosing several words in double quotes. Unlike individual words, phrases must match exactly, so a search for "robot navigat" will not match robot navigation. It is not necessary to place commas or the word "and" between words or phrases in a search string. As with the author search, case sensitivity is activated with the Case sensitive checkbox.
The date range fields allow you to limit a search to publications published within a given range of dates. If only one date is specified, then the other is assumed to be open ended. The format for dates is MM/YYYY, where MM is the number of the month (January=1, December=12) and YYYY is the four digit year.
Specifying a center will limit the search to publications associated with the given center or any of the labs and projects within that center.
Here are some examples. Note: The search strings are enclosed in square brackets for illustrative purposes.
| Search | Result |
|---|---|
| [autonomous navigation] in title | all papers with the words 'autonomous' and 'navigation' anywhere in the title |
| ["autonomous navigation"] in title | all papers with the phrase 'autonomous navigation' anywhere in the title |
| [design system "mobile robot"] in abstract | all papers with the the words 'design' and 'system' and the phrase 'mobile robot' anywhere in the abstract |
| Date range [3/1990] - [] | all papers written since March, 1990 |
| Date range [1/1997] - [12/1997] | all papers written in 1997 (notice the end date includes December) |
| In center [VASC] | all papers written within VASC |

Lab, Group, & Project Search |
This search will find lab or project pages containing the text of the query string. By default, titles and descriptions of current labs, groups, and projects are searched, and those that contain all the words of the query string (in any order) are returned.
partial matches - Unquoted words can make partial matches at word endings, so a search for navigat will match navigate and navigation.
phrases - Phrases are indicated by enclosing one or more words in double quotes. Unlike unquoted words, phrases must match exactly, so a search for "robot navigat" will not match robot navigation.
case sensitivity - Phrase matching is case sensitive, while unquoted word matching is case insensitive.
look in fields - This option allows you to select which fields will be searched. You can search the title (which includes the acronym) or the description (which includes the short description seen in lab/project lists as well as the long description seen on lab/project pages).
status option - This option allows you to select whether current labs/projects, past labs/projects, or both types are included in the search.
