Dear Takeo,
I can't believe it! It was like yesterday when we developed the strain-gage torque sensor for the direct-drive arm, but that was twenty years ago. Good that you somehow managed to visit us and give a talk at UBC in Vancouver. So, in appreciation, I will be there for your 60th birthday bash.
Many Happy Returns!
Clarence.

The first time I heard Takeo speak was during a VASC retreat in 1997. He told us about joining CMU, and gave an overview of his experiences here up to that point. It was a really inspiring talk; Takeo is able to connect to the audience in a deep level. Since then I have had the pleasure of interacting with him several times, and I continue to be impressed (and entertained :)).

Thank you for everything!

Dear Kanade-sensei,

Thank you for having sent me the announcement on the symposium in honor of your 60th birthday on March 8-9 at CMU. But I am sorry I cannot join the symposium because I am busy for creating a new lab and working on the end of academic year in Chiba University. I am still working for Osaka Electro-Communication University as a Visiting Professor. I have some students and keep my lab in Osaka.
My family is in Kyoto. Hence in the half of a week I am in Chiba and in the remaining half I am in Kansai.
I have great respect for your achievements on computer vision and robotics research.
Next month I will meet my 60th birthday, so you and I are in the same generation.
You are one of the most successful men in our generation.

I am now struggling for a new project in Chiba.
I would be happy if I could discuss about our common interests in the near future.

Happy birthday, Takeo! I can't thank you enough for your support, encouragement, and especially patience as my Ph.D. advisor. Your visionary outlook always had you looking beyond what most of the rest of us could imagine, and yet your attention to the details of the moment was never far away. You inspired us all to stretch beyond our own vision, while also helping us hone the fundamentals of disciplined engineering. I still find myself reflecting on your engineering skill and management wisdom, as I try to understand how you have consistently managed to take bright minds and mold them into brilliant, extraordinarily productive professionals -- in other words, you are still mentoring me, even today. I am very pleased to give my heartfelt congratulations to you for the occasion to become 60 years old. Please forgive me that I cannot attend the TK60 symposium scheduled from the 8th to 9th of March, 2007 at the University Center. You will have so much applause not only from attendants but also from absentees who had spent time pleasantly in your laboratory under your guidance. I believe that many students, researches and engineers had learned so many things about what we should see and think while we were staying. I would say to you that don't stop to think and play so that you can keep your condition always good and exist as an energetic navigator to a person using time for tomorrow's innovative challenge in the world.

I think that you are really the specialist to make person "will try" and "can do".
I like your word “imagine like an amateur and execute like an expert“. I can remember clearly the first time I heard it; more than 20 years ago, when I stayed at Dr. P. Tamura's home in Pittsburg, we discussed on the criteria for starting new studies.
We should start from an amateur and don’t relying only on authorities because it should be for the first time and no real authorities; we should be professional to overcome many difficulties and don’t give up without completion.
Then, you said very smart and impressive word "imagine like an amateur and execute like an expert".
You did many studies based on this sprit and accomplished many great successes. Beside you, I also did many studies based on this spirit but made only a few small successes; however, it is no problem because they are still growing steadily.

I believe that many of your students succeeded your sprit; bringing big successes and raising many creative researchers.

I can not attend this time and I would like to celebrate TK60 symposium in Japan.

Congratulation TK60 symposium

TK in my view is one of the few in the field whose work speaks much louder than his/her own voice. No doubt his work will also last longer than his life and many generations to come. Happy 60th birthday to you, TK!

We are very fond and appreciative of Dr. Kanade's daughter, Sayaka. Knowing Sayaka has led us to know about Dr. Kanade, and we are richer in both instances.
