Open House
for Accepted Ph. D. Students

March 23 - 25 2014

Carnegie Mellon University | Robotics Institute | Walking Tour | Campus Map

The Robotics Institute of Carnegie Mellon University invites you to visit us on Sunday-Tuesday, March 23-25, 2014. If you plan to attend, you must notify us by Monday, February 24.

We anticipate that most students will arrive in time for the 7pm kick-off dinner party with current Robotics graduate students Sunday evening, March 23, and stay until early Tuesday evening, March 25. If these dates do not meet your travel needs, we will try to accommodate your request.

We will be assisting you with your travel arrangements, and faculty appointments for your visit. You will be reimbursed up to $500 toward your travel expenses (including flights, ground transportation to/from airports & meals during travel). If you are planning to visit other schools on the same trip, then the total travel costs will be divided equally not to exceed $500. Please save your receipts.

If you have applied to other east coast schools (MIT, Princeton, Brown, etc.), we suggest that you wait to hear from them before making any flight reservations. You should remember that the longer you wait to make your flight, the higher the cost will be. If you have applied only to Carnegie Mellon University and would like us to handle your domestic airfare it will be paid for directly by us. If you are traveling internationally, we ask that you make your own travel arrangements.

If you prefer to make your own travel arrangements and be reimbursed, we require you confirm the itinerary and cost with us prior to purchasing your own ticket. If you need help with flights or travel to multiple destinations in the US, you may contact Irene at CTS Travel directly (cts@usaor.net, (412) 371-8444), and charge the ticket to your credit card.

If you need to make a change to the ticket after it has been issued, please contact Irene at CTS or the agency where you purchased your ticket.  It will be your responsibility to cover any additional costs. Once a ticket has been purchased, we do expect you to visit.  Please plan to arrive at the airport at least two hours prior to departure, thus avoiding any additional expense to you for a missed flight.

When you arrive at the Pittsburgh International Airport, proceed to the Baggage Claim and Ground Transportation area. There are several ways to reach Carnegie Mellon University from the airport:

Several students have agreed to host you in their homes. Your host will get in touch with you after you have confirmed your attendance. If you would prefer to stay in a hotel, please notify Suzanne Muth and she will make the necessary arrangements.

Getting Around

A graduate student, usually your host, will be assigned to you to make sure you get to where you need to be. Dress can be casual. Comfortable shoes are suggested.

March can be somewhat unpredictable. Generally it is still chilly, but in years past we have seen some mild temperatures in March.

By Monday, February 24, please let us know if you plan to attend our open house and please provide a list, in order of preference, of at least 6-8 faculty members you would be interested in talking with during your visit. Please refer to the Faculty Research Guide found at: http://www.ri.cmu.edu/research_guide/

Please contact Suzanne Muth at (412) 268-3733 or lyonsmuth@cmu.edu by February 24.
